Prof. LJ Grobler is an esteemed and accomplished academic figure in the field of engineering, renowned for his expertise in energy efficiency and advanced manufacturing. From 2012 to 2017, he served as the Dean of the Engineering Faculty at the North-West University (NWU) in South Africa, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the institution’s engineering programs and fostering a culture of excellence in education and research.

After his impactful term as Dean, Prof. Grobler has continued to contribute significantly to the field of engineering. He currently holds the esteemed position of Professor in Mechanical Engineering and serves as the Director of CFAM Technologies, a renowned company specializing in advanced manufacturing solutions. In these roles, he brings his extensive knowledge and expertise to drive innovation, research, and practical applications in the field of mechanical engineering.

As the Director of CFAM Technologies, Prof. Grobler spearheads the development of ground-breaking technologies and applications that revolutionize twin-screw extrusion in the food and feed processing industries. His visionary leadership and technical expertise have played a vital role in the company’s success, establishing it as a prominent player in the advanced manufacturing sector.

During 2007/8, Prof. Grobler made history by becoming the first non-American President of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) based in Atlanta, USA. In 2002, he founded the Southern African Association for Energy Efficiency (SAEE) and led as its president until 2012, demonstrating his commitment to promoting energy efficiency and sustainability in the region.

Prof. Grobler is widely recognized for his certifications and contributions to the field of energy efficiency. He became a certified Energy Manager (CEM) in 1998 and a Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) in 2000, both awarded by the AEE. Additionally, he is a registered professional engineer (Pr Eng) with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) since 1995. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Pretoria in 1995 and has since been an AEE trainer for the CEM program in Southern Africa, introducing the program in 2002 and presenting it more than 30 times.

Prof. LJ Grobler’s remarkable achievements have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the eta Awards 2010 in South Africa. He was recognized for his extensive involvement in energy efficiency through measurement and verification, his visualization program showcasing energy consumption in buildings, and for setting the benchmark for training and development of energy engineers. He is a fellow of the South African Academy of Engineering and has authored and co-authored over 40 local and international articles. Furthermore, he has presented and co-presented more than 50 papers at local and international conferences and seminars. In 2016, he was honoured with induction into the AEE Hall of Fame, solidifying his status as a leader in the field of energy efficiency.

Chris is a passionate energy professional with over 10 years of experience in energy management and renewable energy. He is the founder and owner of Eenovators Limited, an Energy Service Company (ESCO) that focuses on providing commercial and industrial clients with energy management solutions aimed at reducing energy consumption and costs. Chris has been involved in hundreds of energy audits, energy projects, and energy management training. He was awarded the young Sub-Saharan professional in 2015 by the AEE and a top 40 under 40 men in Kenya for the year 2018.

Chris is a Past Vice President and Past President-Elect of the Association of Energy Professionals Eastern Africa (AEPEA), and a Founding Director and Board Member of the Institute of Energy Professionals Africa (IEPA).

Chris brings a wealth of experience in terms of energy management, energy entrepreneurship, and use of energy analytics to run a successful energy management program.

Vutivi, Assessments Manager at IEPA, holds a National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). She is a Certified Energy Manager and Certified Energy Auditor from The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE).

Facilitator from Assessment College, Assessor and Moderator from Turnstone Training Solutions. She has proven Mechanical, Systems Design skills with energy management and project administration skills. She is a driven Engineer with over 3 years of combined working experience in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Energy Auditing, Project Management and Planning including Project and Assessments Administration.

Vutivi is also a member of the development for the “Building EPC” App. Assisted with the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) data collection and calculations in 2019 for the CEA LEDET pilot project and also with the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) Practitioner Skills Development Pilot Programme with Student onboarding, on site audits with the students at the campus, one-on-one EPC information sessions, IEPA Exam proctor for UNIDO and EPC examinations, and Assignment Assessor for the EPC Certification. Vutivi was also part of the Development Team and Trainer for the Training of Trainer Programme for the EPC for Buildings in Ghana.

Albert is an energy engineer and international energy trainer. He has conducted over 100 energy training courses worldwide to thousands of professionals. He has 19 years of practical experience in over 500 energy audits. He has trained and consulted in 45 countries on 4 continents.

Albert is an international trainer and contributing developer to the CEM®, the CEA™, and the CIEP training courses for the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE®) based in the USA. He currently serves on the following:
– the AEE® International Certification Board,
– the CEM® Global Training Development Team,
– the CEA™ Exam Task Analysis Task Force, and
– the CIEP Certification Board.

He certified as a CEM® in 2008, and is also a CEA™, REP™, and CMVP®. He is certified as both a UNIDO Compressed Air Systems Optimisation (CASO)-, and a UNIDO Pump Systems Optimisation (PSO) international expert and trainer. He also has steam-, and fan systems expert level training.

He has held various positions in the energy consulting and industrial and mining industries, as well as a senior engineer in the North West University’s Measurement and Verification (M&V) Team. He has published 19 articles in energy-related journals and publications and has presented or co-presented 23 papers at various national and international conferences.

Mercy Mahinda is a Data Center engineer with over 6 years’ experience in the data center field. Part of her roles in the data center involves looking at data center efficiency requirements with the goal to reduce power usage effectiveness (PUE). She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering and an ongoing Masters’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering with her research concentrating on energy optimization.

She holds various industry certifications, including Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Certified Measurements and Verification Professional (CMVP) by AEE, An Accredited Tier Designer (ATD) for data centers by Uptime Institute, and is an ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management Systems Lead Implementer from BSI training academy. She is a member of the African Women Energy Entrepreneurs Framework (AWEEF).

In 2018, Mercy received the upcoming Engineer of the year award from Datacloud Europe Awards. She is a top 40 under 40 women 2021.

Mercy is also an AEE Approved Trainer for Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) trainer.

Sean Poole PhD mechanical engineering focusing on small wind turbine blade design. Sean manages various energy related research projects and lectures renewable energy short courses at NMU. He has been involved with renewable energy research at NMMU since 2013. Another interest of his is prototyping and concept design which has lead to the founding of his company ProVolution.

Sean conducts REP in Johannesburg, as well as in Port Elizabeth where the course includes various renewable energy site visits.

Christo has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering, is a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP), a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), and is a member of the MVCSA, SAEEC, and AEE.  He is constantly involved in workshops and workgroups to improve training, standards, and protocols in the vast field of energy management. He is one of only two trainers certified to train CMVP in Sub-Sahara Africa.  To date, he has trained more than 330 delegates in more than 18 courses.

Christo is the owner of CFJM Solutions – a specialist industry energy consultancy and one of the few SANAS accredited M&V specialist entities. He has gained vast experience in the M&V industry over the past 18 years by being involved in over 450 M&V projects spanning the Eskom DSM M&V processes, 12i and 12L tax incentive, DoE financed municipal energy efficiency projects, performance contract assessment, and verifications. These assessments covered all types of projects and energy sources across the industrial, commercial, agricultural, residential, and health sectors.

He has assisted Namibia in defining the basics for their M&V industry while also being the preferred M&V professional to a number of large profile clients such as BBEnergy, Mediclinic, KPMG, Anglo-American, Sibanye Stillwater, Twinsaver, Curroseal, and others.

Denis van Es

Denis van Es has his BSc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering with over 45 years of technical and managerial experience in mechanical services and energy management within South Africa, continental Africa, and the UK. He is AEE accredited to train CMVP. He has strong organizational, conceptual, and business development skills and is experienced in training, mentoring, and supervision of personnel. He is an experienced academic in the field of energy efficiency, including the preparation of guidelines for the Clean Development Mechanism, and is an external examiner for post-graduate learners at both the University of Cape Town and the University of Stellenbosch. He has an international accreditation as an M&V trainer and is a Certified Measurement & Verification Professional. He is accredited under a US Department of Energy programme for industrial energy audits.

Denis van Es was a member of the SABS technical committee working on ISO 50 000 and is qualified at an expert level in Energy Management Systems. He was a contributor to a recently published Global Energy Assessment, focusing on industrial energy efficiency in South Africa. Further international activity includes being a contributing candidate at a G8 conference in Oxford, England. He works as a consultant to the industry in the area of resource efficiency, especially energy efficiency, including implementation under the Eskom Integrated Demand Management programme. He is a registered Professional Engineer in South Africa and as a Chartered Engineer in the UK. He is a Member of several engineering institutions and is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Denis currently applies himself mainly to training in the fields of Energy Management Systems, as well as Measurement & Verification and is an AEE accredited trainer for CMVP.

Olakunle Owoeye

Olakunle Owoeye has a B.Eng in Electrical Engineering, and is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) with the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) and Mandela Washington Fellowship Energy Track in Sustainable Energy Development and Policy. With 7 years of experience in energy efficiency, renewable energy development, coordinating and conducting energy review/management for industries in Nigeria, audited over 200 facilities in different economic sectors, and trained over 400 persons during this time. Olakunle is a qualified CEM® trainer with AEE®. Skilled in M&V, sustainable energy software design – Homer & RETScreen, Solmetric application, commissioning, project management, IPP, ISO 50001,  transformer, energy Modeling – LEAP.

Olakunle is the Managing Director of Ecowatt in Nigeria.

Macben is an energy and automation professional with over 15 years’ experience in industrial automation, energy management and renewable energy projects. He holds a PhD in Renewable Energy Technology, a Master of Science degree in Energy Technology and a Master of Science degree in Mechatronic Engineering.

During the past decade his work has focused on design, evaluation and development of techno-efficient solutions for different industrial setups. He has also led the execution of several renewable energy projects in and beyond the East African region.

Macben holds several industrial licenses including a class A-energy auditor, T3 Solar PV technician, an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) license and several other international certifications.

He is a registered Professional Engineer by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK).

He is a Registered Consulting Engineer by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), a corporate member of the institution of Engineers of Kenya a licensed EIA /Audit Expert and a Licensed Energy Auditor –ERC/EA/00005 Category A. In 2016 he won of the AEE Award for “Professional Development” in sub-Saharan Africa.

He is the Principal Consultant/ Managing Director at EMS Consultants Ltd, a company that offers consultancy in Building construction (Engineering services), environmental impact assessments, energy efficiency, energy audits and training on energy management.

Richard Garner

Richard brings over 20 years of sustainability management, water strategy and progressive water efficiency and conservation practice experience. His experience comes from previous roles within the mining and consulting sector where he has dealt with all facets of water management from strategy development, policy, regulatory authorisations, environmental management on mining operations, and risk assessment to operational implementation, auditing, measurement and verification, reporting, water initiatives including standards and efficiency programmes.

In addition to his Pr.Sci.Nat, and MSc Ecology, Richard has an Advanced Social Development certificate from the University of Cambridge and an Advanced Management Programme certificate from GIBS Business School. Richard was a board member for the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) for 3 years and was elected WISA council member for 7 years, now serving as Lead for the WISA Mine Water Division Committee. He currently holds the position of Environmental Services Head of Department of MSA Group, focusing primarily on the mining and energy sectors in environment, water, ESG reporting and mine closure.

Jan-Paul is the Managing Director at Delta Carbon, he holds a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

He has over ten years in the energy field with strong focus on energy performance certificates, building energy audits, energy management system implementation (EnMS), energy efficiency (EE), demand-side management (DSM), measurement and verification (M&V), Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) and income tax incentive claims, i.e. sections 12I & 12L.

Jan-Paul has trained on SANS 1544, SANS 10400-XA and EPC Regulations for IEPA in the 1day EPC Training as well as the EPC Practitioners Skills Programme, including various other trainings.

His professional experience includes implementing several turn-key energy efficiency and low carbon technology projects from conceptual design through to commissioning and hand-over. He has done over 50 section 12L energy efficiency tax claims for clients in the manufacturing and other large industries, totaling more than R 9 billion in tax allowances, and technical signatory to more than R6,5 billion between 2016-2021. Including over 40 carbon tax and GHG quantification studies totaling more than 2 000 tonnes Co2 equivalent reductions due to energy efficiency projects.

Louis holds a Masters degree in Engineering from the University of Pretoria, with over 30 years of experience in energy related fields and has focused significantly on Strategic and Scenario Planning, Energy Efficiency, Energy Optimisation and Energy Management.

Louis has developed the highly acclaimed Fundamentals of Energy Management Training (FEMT) course and has now redeveloped it into the Introduction to Energy Management Training (IEMT), providing two critical skills, namely (i) for attending company managers and financial officers to work aligned with technical energy managers, and (ii) practical fundamental technical skills for engineers venturing into the energy industry.
Louis has exceptional communication and presentation skills and holds a Toastmasters International Advanced Bronze status.

Vera is the Skills Development Manager at IEPA and holds an Advanced Diploma in Mining Engineering from the University of South Africa (UNISA). She is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) from The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). Vera also achieved the Top Performer Status for the Department of Limpopo Economic Development Environment and Tourism (LEDET) Student Programme in 2016/2017.

She has completed her Facilitator course from Assessment College. She has proven energy management and project administration skills.

She is a driven Engineer with over 7 years of combined working experience in Engineering, Energy Engineering, Energy Auditing, Audit reporting, including auditing of government buildings, Project Management and Planning, awareness campaigns for energy efficiency, including Project and Assessments Administration as well as Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) Certification Coordinator for the Sub-Sahara African Region.

Vera is also a mentor for LEDET Student Programmes, following the successful completion of her student group’s program.

Barry Platt has over 15 years’ experience in the energy industry. He has conducted over 100 energy and resource efficiency projects and assessments at large and small companies around South Africa and internationally, providing these clients with in-depth information and recommendations with regard to baselines, implementation options and financial analysis.

He has completed many energy system optimisation and resource efficiency projects with excellent savings results. These included fans, pumps, compressed air, process flows, materials and waste balances, electrical and water balances. Barry has also completed and qualified in various UNIDO, internationally sanctioned training workshops relating to Energy Management and System Efficiency. He currently facilitates training courses up to expert level in the subjects of fan and pump system optimisation.

Eustace is licensed as a class A-energy auditor, T3 Solar PV technician and Solar Hot Water Technician. He currently consultants and trains in energy efficiency and conservation. Eustace has worked in the energy space for over 15 years and has immense experience in the manufacturing sector, building and industrial engineering services, energy auditing, and evaluation of energy audits. He has completed 30 energy audits and evaluated more than 900 energy audits.

He has conducted numerous training for people in facilities consuming more than 180,000 KWh for the purpose of complying with the Energy (Energy Management) Regulations, 2012 in Kenya. In 2016, Eustace was awarded the Energy Engineer of the year in the Sub-Saharan Africa region by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) in Washington DC.

Eng. Jabes O. Manyala, obtained a BSc Hons in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nairobi, Kenya in 1978.

He is a registered Professional Engineer by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK). He is also licensed as a Class A Energy Auditor and Class A-1 Electrician by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority of Kenya (EPRA).

He has established himself as an Energy expert having amassed experience from Kenya Pipeline Company ltd where he rose through the ranks from an Engineer (Tele-control and instrumentation) in 1992 to Chief Manager, Technical in 2009.

He is currently a practicing Consultant in Energy Management, Project Management, Energy Auditing, Pipeline Engineering, and Operations & Maintenance. He also works as an Energy Auditor at Eenovators Ltd, where is credited with performing more than 30 Investment Grade Energy audits over the past 7 years.

He is an AEE Approved CMVP Trainer.

Jaco Homann is the course trainer for SAQA-aligned training courses content and assessment developer for the Institute of Energy Professionals Africa (IEPA), as well as an EWSETA Assessor.

Jaco holds a BSc degree in Agricultural Engineering and is a Certified Energy Manager and Certified Energy Auditor. He achieved the top learner award for CEA.

Jaco has experience in working in the agricultural industry and has conducted energy audits under guidance from lead energy auditors. Jaco has conducted numerous training session in the basics of energy management, and is a mentor for youth development.

Lifa Mbowane holds a National Diploma in electrical engineering. In the year 2017 She was part of the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) youth program where she was based at Bidvest Facilities Management for her mentorship in Energy Management by Energy Training Foundation (EnTF). Her responsibilities as part of her mentorship, included Monthly report on eleven buildings (Report on each premises for both water & electricity), baseline consumption, benchmark, invoice discrepancy, bill verification, patterns, and trends. She was also involved in other major activities for their clients, with the main focus on compiling business case studies for opportunities and projects towards implementation.

Lifa is currently working as an Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) Certification Coordinator for the Institute of Energy Professionals Africa. Included in her portfolio is Occupational Health and Safety, managing the regional examination bookings, IEPA Exam Proctoring, Processing delegates’ information, liaising with clients, Data management, and certification application and certification renewals processing.

Faure has his B. Eng degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, his M. Eng in Management and Development, and is the trainer for SAPVIA PV GreenCard as well as for the QCTO Occupational Certificate for Solar Photovoltaic Service Technician NQF Level 5. 

He is currently working towards his PhD at the North West University with a research focus on Small Scale Embedded Generation Integration for Africa. His Masters’s research was focused on the sustainability of the renewable energy independent power producer procurement program in South Africa. 

Faure has been working in the PV Solar industry since 2010, with experience in research, design, installation, implementation, management, operation, and maintaining small to medium solar PV plants. Faure has been a trainer for the past 4 years with close to 40 training sessions already presented.

Sheldon Bode graduated with his BSc Electrical and Computer Engineering Degree from UCT, is a member of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), and has obtained his Certified Energy Management (CEM) and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP).

He is currently the Lead Analytics and Design Engineer at Energy Drive in Durban who provide capex free energy reduction solutions specialising in fan and pumping systems. Energy Drive has over 65MW of motors under VSD Control, has saved over 500 000 000kWh for their clients and won the SAEEC Energy Services Company of the Year award in 2019.

Previously an Environmental Engineer at Toyota South Africa, Sheldon has been involved in Energy Reduction projects and Energy Management Systems for over 10 years. He has successfully implemented a wide variety of energy reduction solutions including, but not limited to, compressed air, steam, pumping, lighting, water heating, and HVAC systems. Sheldon’s efforts contributed to the department in which he worked receiving several accolades including the SAEE 2013 and 2014 Energy Company of the Year Awards, and the Toyota Motor Corporation International Platinum Award for Best CO2 Reduction. He has also attended System Optimisation Courses on Steam, Pump and Fan Systems and is a UNIDO National Expert in Compressed Air Systems, Electric Motors, Energy Management Systems and Energy Performance Measurement Indicators.

Doctor is a Sustainability Engineer at Delta Carbon actively working on Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) and has already successfully completed projects where EPCs have been issued.

He has experience in conducting energy audits in automotive plants, as well as lighting systems, measurement and verification, and initiation and implementation of energy efficiency interventions for the automotive plant.
He has his N.Dip Mechanical Engineering Cum Laude, BTech Mechanical Engineering, achieving Best Performance Award in Mathematics and Motor Trade. He entered the energy industry through the youth development program run by Limpopo Economic Development Environment and Tourism (LEDET) in collaboration with Energy Training Foundation, now IEPA. Here he achieved top student of the program, as well as top student in Certified Energy Manager examination, he is currently a Certified Energy Manager In Training accredited by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE).

Konrad Boshoff

Konrad is a qualified professional mechanical engineer and founder of Freemotion. Previously serving as head of a strategic energy and motion research division in Transnet Engineering.

Attaining professional status in 2015, he completed his M. Eng trough NWU in 2016 (Cum Laude) in Energy Management on rollingstock, also successfully completing his GCC (Factories), as well as achieving top student status in CEM and CEA with a 92% average.
He has experience in various energy audits, from office buildings, manufacturing and steel fabrication facilities, to foundries and has assisted in the adoption of SANS 50001 in his organisation.

In addition, he is leading energy strategy on development of hybrid power systems for mobile and stationary applications. He is currently enrolled for PhD in Electrical Engineering through Stellenbosch University.

Darius Booyens

Darius Booyens is Mechanical Engineer, Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) and Certified SAPVIA PV GreenCard solar designer and installer and an approved trainer and co-developer for IEPA on Energy Performance Certification (EPC).

He has been involved in mechanical and thermal design projects for energy and active cooling (refrigeration cycle) load reduction in base transmission stations, small-scale embedded generation (SSEG) feasibility study, and solar system design, and installation.

Darius also has experience in the physical asset management space in maintenance strategy, maintenance policy, maintenance plan development, asset register hierarchy development, maintenance system implementation (CMMS), criticality analysis (FMECA) and failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA). Darius is further interested in scalable energy optimization and monitoring systems.

Darrin McComb has his BSc. Hon, M, OL, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), is a Professional Natural Scientist (SACNASP) and a Green Star SA Accredited Professional, an accredited UNIDO Steam Systems Optimisation trainer, Fans Systems Optimisation trainer, Energy Management System Optimisation trainer and a Resource Efficiency Cleaner Production trainer.

For the past 18years focused on waste management, Cleaner Production Audits (solid waste, energy and water in particular), as well as sustainability on a strategic and implementation level. This includes co-generation feasibility analyses and carbon footprint against the GHG Protocol. Darrin has developed and conducted energy workshops for private concerns such as Coca Cola Africa and Distell as well as expert level training for the National Cleaner Production Centre South Africa (NCPC-SA).

Darrin has been accredited as a UNIDO steam system expert and trainer through the IEE programme and has done assess, emts across a broad range of industries including petrochemical, automobile, agro-processing and chemical sectors.
