Launching in 2026 – an introduction to understanding nuclear power for Africa

As the world re-evaluates its energy mix, nuclear power is emerging as a key player in achieving sustainable, low-carbon energy systems. From established economies to nations new to nuclear, the global movement toward nuclear inclusion is accelerating — and Africa is part of that story.

In October 2025, the South African government released the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP2025), setting out the roadmap for the country’s electricity future. The plan outlines a significant increase in nuclear power generation, with both large-scale plants like Koeberg and next-generation Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) forming part of South Africa’s future energy landscape.
