Steam System Optimisation (SSO)

Steam systems are among the largest energy-consuming systems in industrial operations, offering substantial opportunities for optimisation when a holistic understanding of their fundamentals, tools, and resources is applied. Steam, as a highly flexible heat transfer medium, can be efficiently generated, precisely controlled, and effectively distributed. Achieving this, however, requires a focus on the entire system—addressing both supply and demand side interactions while managing fluctuating energy demands over time.

Following best practices in the design, procurement, operation, and maintenance of steam systems is essential for cost-effective and energy-efficient plant operations.

What you will learn:

  • Overview & Fundamentals Understand steam usage and its role in energy systems, Learn a systems approach to steam system optimisation.

  • Software Modelling Tools Explore free software for system modelling, Participate in model generation exercises to simulate steam system performance.

  • Steam Generation Delve into boiler operations, loss reduction, and efficiency improvements, Study feedwater management, deaerators, blowdown processes, and fuel switching.

  • Steam Distribution Identify and address leaks, improve insulation, and enhance system efficiency.

  • End Use Evaluate steam demand and ensure optimal supply-demand balance.

  • Condensate Recovery Optimize steam trap operation, condensate recovery, and flash tank use.

  • Cogeneration Understand the role of backpressure and condensing turbines in steam systems.

The training has enhanced my knowledge in steam systems. The “MEASUR” online tool will assist me in the optimization of steam systems.

IEPA in conjunction with UNIDO delivers some of the best industry-specific and hands-on training classes I have attended. Their approach to the online methodology makes learning seamless. I am better for it.

This was my first introduction to steam operations & mechanical engineering, I am alien to this field but the experience of tutor & simplified course materials made my exposure and introduction to this a bit easier though I must admit I’ll have to study more and acquaint myself with this field. I hope the salient lessons I picked will help me guide/inform my clients to whom we supply energy to optimise their steam operations (to save money) and also refer to this course to the engineers I come across with in steam and boiler operations.

The SSO training was a hands-on, thought-provoking program that left me inspired; Very well done and very useful information delivered in an excellent manner. Great workshop! Highly recommendable.

As a CEM trainer I gained training skills and perfected my knowledge in boilers and steam systems especially on energy efficiency performance. This course is good for a person pursuing a career in energy efficiency
