This comprehensive training equips delegates with the essential knowledge and skills to achieve compliance with Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) regulations for buildings. Key topics include:

  • Regulations, Standards, and Documentation:
    Explore relevant regulations such as SANS 1544, SANS 10400-XA, and professional registration requirements. (Note: Standards are not included in the training package and must be purchased directly from the SABS at www.sabs.co.za).
  • Building Design and Classification:
    Learn about building classifications, climatic regions, and design considerations, including building envelope elements (orientation, walls, fenestration, roofs, insulation, and floors).
  • Energy Usage and Calculations:
    Gain a detailed understanding of calculations for floor areas, energy consumption, assessment periods, calorific values, and more. Topics include fuel types, utility bills, data collection, and meter calibration.
  • EPC Certificates and Energy Performance Scales:
    Analyze the EPC format, energy performance scales, required information, and reference performance determinations.
  • Roles and Responsibilities:
    Understand the duties of key stakeholders, including SANEDI, EPC Registered Professionals, building owners, and accounting officers in the EPC process.

Background

Under the National Energy Act (Section 19(1)(b)), the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy mandates the display and submission of EPCs for buildings (Government Gazette 43792, Notice 700).

  • Buildings exceeding 1000m² in the public sector or 2000m² in the private sector fall under these regulations.
  • EPCs must reflect energy consumption (kWh/m²/year) and be displayed in the building’s foyer and submitted to SANEDI every five years.

Certification Requirements

  • Attendance: 90% verified attendance for Certificate of Attendance eligibility.
  • Exam Pass Rate: 60%
